Men with Cushions

The BRAUNTEX Theatre donated over 300 theatre chairs to the Rialto Theatre in Alice, Texas. The Rialto, like the Brauntex, is an old movie theatre located in downtown. They found out about what the Brauntex has accomplished through our website.

The Brauntex is extremely pleased to be able to help the Rialto Theatre with additional seats for their theatre.

In Remembrance of Charles "Chuck" Walsh 1932-2004

Chuck and Sandie
in the lobby,
now named for Chuck

Saturday, February 21, 2004, the BRAUNTEX Performing Arts Theatre Association lost one of its founding board members and a dear friend. Charles "Chuck" Walsh had been involved with the renovations of the theatre from the beginning in 1999. Chuck didn't single-handedly raise the roof of the old Brauntex Movie Theater but his passion to provide a performing arts facility for amateur, as well as professional, performing arts groups was so heartfelt that under his leadership and with his devotion and focus the first and second phases of theatre renovation is complete. Chuck was recognized by the Theatre Association on January 23, 2004 for his tireless work as Chairman of the Building Committee by naming the theatre lobby the Charles J. "Chuck" Walsh Lobby.

Chuck retired 10 years ago from NASA, where he had worked for 25 years. Upon his move to Canyon Lake, he soon became involved with the Hill Country Barbershop Chorus, which in turn brought him to the Theatre. Chuck's eyes would fill with tears because he was so proud of the progress of the theatre to date. As an example of Chuck's dedication to the theatre, he attended a board retreat on January 24, 2004, even though he was sick, where he made a presentation to the board regarding his extended goals for the theatre. His aspiration was to have dressing rooms built at the rear of the theatre.

The "Chuck Walsh Memorial Fund" has been established to achieve his goals for the theatre. If you would like to help make Chuck's dream a reality, contributions to the theatre are being accepted. Checks should be made payable to the Brauntex Performing Arts Theatre with a notation that the donation is for the "Chuck Walsh Memorial Fund". All contributions are tax deductible.

Chuck is survived by his wife of 49 years, Sandie, two daughters, Shauna Hulecki and Erin Gant, two sons, Matthew Walsh and John Walsh, and numerous grandchildren.

Chuck, we will all miss your smiling face, sense of humor, many talents and above all your friendship.

Extraordinary things happen when ordinary people work together for a common goal.  Ever since the BRAUNTEX closed as a movie theatre in 1998, ordinary people have worked hard to transform a fading and almost forgotten building into a beautiful downtown attraction that will provide a source of entertainment for this and future generations.

Barnard Donegan Insurance Company and The New Braunfels Theatre Company are shining examples of the extraordinary things that happen when people work together for a common goal.  Barnard Donegan wanted to treat their employees to dinner and a show for their Christmas party.  They were in the BRAUNTEX office making arrangements when they overheard the need for stage drapes.

"Stage drapes were high on the 'want' list for the BRAUNTEX Theatre, but not in the budget" said executive director Janet Allen.  "The New Braunfels Theatre Company offered to pay half of the cost to install front stage drapes for their November 28 opening of The Odd Couple if we could pay the other half.  Their offer was very tempting, but there just was no money in the budget for drapes at the time."

No money for drapes, that is, until Dick Gray and Martin Morris repeated what they overheard to Bruce Barnard.  By the next morning, Dick Gray called the BRAUNTEX to say that unless some little angel had brought money for drapes overnight, Barnard Donegan Insurance Company would donate the balance needed to get the drapes installed.

What makes this act of generosity so spectacular is the timing.  Now the BRAUNTEX has new drapes installed in time for The Odd Couple production thanks to the New Braunfels Theatre Company and Barnard Donegan Insurance Company.
